Presentation
Okay, so I need to put this research into a short presentation. Pecha Kucha style, 20 slides of 20 seconds each. Total runtime of 6 minutes 40 seconds. Tight timing, I’ll have to plan it out and rehearse a lot. I can’t put everything I’ve learnt into this, as there just isn’t enough time. I just need to select the basic points. As the slides are restrained to 20 seconds each, I decided to make my script and slides pretty separate. The slides mostly show quotes that are relevant to what is being said which I found during my research, however, for most of them I don’t directly reference them while talking. This means I can run over a slide and hopefully, it won’t be too obvious.
That went better than expected! I didn’t have any major breaks or runovers, and, at least on my side, I spoke clearly. I stuck a silly transition at the end, as I think the presentation as a whole is pretty heavy, talking about large societal changes. For some reason, even though I was somewhat confident with the script, my legs were wobbling the entire time. Guess that’s the first time I’ve had to give a presentation with a huge projector, so maybe that was it.
From the other talks, I had the most interest in Jamie’s, as it was the topic I was least knowledgeable on. How we are misled by electric cars, and they aren’t really an ideal solution in the slightest. I learnt that replacing every car in use in the UK would take up a large percentage of the world’s remaining heavy metals. This shows that this is not scalable, and we need to find a better solution. Not many solutions were mentioned, although this is likely due to the technology still emerging.
This research topic has been really interesting to me, as I don’t tend to think of myself as a very political person. Coming in with a pretty open mind, I learnt about potential societal changes to reduce the inequalities of our current systems, and how we can improve our lives to make them more fulfilling. The topic was different to a lot of others, as it’s not really that much about emerging technologies. It’s more about exploring our relationship with technology, and how we can keep it healthy and supportive.
